The Ultimate New Zealand Bungy Jump Breakdown

What Bungy Jumps Are in New Zealand?

New Zealand is the home of bungy jumping.

Not only was the concept born out of Kiwi innovation, but it is also what draws many adventurous people to New Zealand in the first place.

There are six bungy jumps across New Zealand’s North and South Islands, most of which are hosted by AJ Hackett Bungy, the world renowned bungy jumping company.

There are also a few other bungy jumping companies you might not know about that are worth looking into if you’re keen to try one in the quieter nooks of New Zealand.

The New Zealand Bungy Breakdown

North Island Bungy Jumps

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND

  1. Auckland: Harbour Bridge

LOCATION OF THE AUCKLAND BRIDGE BUNGY

Situated in New Zealand’s biggest city, the Auckland Harbour Bridge is home to a 40 meter high bungy jump above the ocean.

Owned and operated by AJ Hackett Bungy, this jump is only accessible by a bridge walk, which means the crew have to strap you in and clip you on before you even leave land.

BUNGY JUMP STYLES FOR THE AUCKLAND BRIDGE BUNGY

The Auckland Bridge Bungy is usually done with your feet connected together with foot cuffs allowing you to jump forwards or backwards.

After a few bounces, you can pull a strap that releases your feet allowing you to come back up to the jump deck right side up.

The jump crew will give you instructions on this before you launch it!

With a Jump Master’s discretion, you may be able to jump freestyle, which means you can basically jump however you’d like.

If you’re able, you can do flips, handstands, and so much more.

Just ask your Jump Master what’s possible on the day and she or he will talk you through it all.

There’s a “Jump Menu” you can choose from when deciding on a freestyle option.

All jumpers return to the jump deck by means of a winch system.

AUCKLAND BRIDGE BUNGY: THE ONLY BUNGY JUMP WITH AN OCEAN TOUCH IN NEW ZEALAND

Depending on the tide, you may also be able to get a “water touch” in the ocean.

This means the potential for a hand touch (just dipping your hands in the water), your head in, or more of your body depending on a few factors.

Ask the crew for this if it’s something you’d like to do.

This is the only site in New Zealand where you can do an ocean touch with a bungy!

THE COST OF A BUNGY JUMP AT THE AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE

The jump costs:

  • $165 NZD for an adult
  • $135 NZD for a student
  • $135 for a child

With it, you not only get the jump, but you also get a free t-shirt and jumper certificate to brag to all of your friends!

Photos and videos are available for purchase on the day.

There are various options available including USBs, easy-to-download online options, and more.

Sometimes the second jump price is significantly cheaper than your first one and it can often be extended for use on another day (typically within six months).

Ask the Bungy Crew what deals are available.

There are also combo deals if you’d like to do other products such as the SkyWalk, SkyJump or Bridge Climb in Auckland or even another AJ Hackett Bungy, the Nevis Swing or Catapult, the Kawarau Zipride, or the Ledge Swing in Queenstown.

South Island Bungy Jumps

QUEENSTOWN

  1. Nevis Highwire Bungy

LOCATION OF THE NEVIS BUNGY

Tucked away on private land in Gibbston Valley just 40 minutes outside of Queenstown CBD, the Nevis Highwire Bungy is New Zealand’s highest freefall bungy jump owned and operated by AJ Hackett Bungy.

This jump is only accessible by private transportation, which means you cannot drive there yourself.

The Nevis Bungy pod is suspended 134 meters above the Nevis River reachable by a highwire cable car.

BUNGY JUMP STYLES FOR THE NEVIS BUNGY

The Nevis Bungy can only be done one way.

Feet together and forward.

Believe us, though, you won’t want to do crazy tricks on this one.

All you’ll be thinking about is how high you are and how you’ll get yourself off the platform.

To keep it simple, all you have to do is fall or jump out forward and let gravity do the rest.

Your feet are connected with foot cuffs and after a few bounces, you’ll be able to pull a strap that releases your feet allowing you to come back up to the jump pod right side up.

The jump crew will explain how to do this on the day of your jump.

All jumpers will return to the jump pod by means of a winch system.

NEVIS BUNGY: THE HIGHEST BUNGY JUMP IN NEW ZEALAND

The Nevis Bungy Jump is for the thrill seekers.

The people who are keen to really get out of your comfort zone all gravitate to the little pod suspended by cables situated between two mountains.

This jump site is not only amazing to jump at, but it’s also an incredible experience for spectators who don’t feel confident enough to take the leap.

The Nevis Bungy pod has a partially glass floor so that you can watch your loved ones plummet towards the earth.

Don’t worry, the Nevis has a perfect safety record, so your friends and family always come back up!

THE COST OF A NEVIS BUNGY

An adult and child Nevis Bungy costs $275 NZD.

The student price for the Nevis Bungy is $245 NZD.

If you wish to bring spectators along with you, the cost is $50 per person.

The reason for this is that the bungy is only accessible by private transport.

With your bungy jump, you get a professionally designed jumper tee and an “I did it” jumper certificate to frame and show off back home!

Photos and videos are available for purchase on the day of your jump.

There are a multitude of options that you can select from.

Just speak to the photo & video department about the deals that are available.

There are also combo deals if you’d like to do other products such as another AJ Hackett Bungy, the Nevis Swing or Catapult, the Kawarau Zipride, the Ledge Swing, or the SkyWalk, SkyJump, Bridge Climb in Auckland.

HOW LONG WILL THE NEVIS BUNGY JUMP TAKE?

The jump itself is about a three minute experience (depending on if you hesitate at the edge or not!) and the free fall can last up to 8.5 seconds.

The whole duration of the activity can take up to four hours since you’ll need to leave time for transport to and from the site.

You are hosted throughout the entire journey and will be guided through the experience from the moment you check in until you’re dropped off back in Queenstown.

TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE NEVIS BUNGY

The Nevis Bungy lives on private land, which means you cannot access it with your own vehicle.

You can get picked up in a 4WD bungy bus at the Station Building in Queenstown, Frankton Bus Shelter, or the Kawarau Bridge.

You must organize your pick up location ahead of time so the driver knows where to get you.

Buses depart at multiple times throughout the day, so pick a time that suits you and book your jump accordingly.

You must check in 30 minutes prior to your bus departure time, so be sure to note when that is.

If you’re feeling particularly baller, you can fly to and from the Nevis Bungy site in a helicopter, but it will be a premium price.

Email us at [email protected] if you’re interested in this option.

  1. Kawarau Bridge Bungy

LOCATION OF THE KAWARAU BRIDGE BUNGY

Owned and operated by AJ Hackett Bungy, the Kawarau Bridge Bungy is located approximately 30 minutes outside of Queenstown’s CBD in Otago’s Gibbston Valley.

The K-Bridge (as locals call it) is a DOC site suspended 43 meters over the Kawarau River and it is located amongst some of the best wineries in the region (a little liquid courage may be coming into play here).

You can drive to the bridge yourself, you can bike there from Arrowtown, or you can catch a complimentary bungy bus from Queenstown.

KAWARAU BRIDGE BUNGY JUMP STYLES

The Kawarau Bridge is the world home of bungy jumping, which means it’s the best place to do the classic forward swan dive.

Your feet will be tied together the same way they have been since 1988 when bungy jumping became a commercialized activity for the public.

You can jump solo or you can jump tandem.  In some instances, you may even be able to do a three-way bungy!

If you’ve done a bungy before, you can ask your Jump Master if you can go backwards (this applies to both solo and tandem jumps).

You may just be lucky enough to try the backwards trust fall where you put all your faith into the elastic bungy cord tied to your feet and just launch it.

At the Kawarau Bridge, you have the option to touch the river below should the conditions allow it.

Depending on the stretchiness of the cord, the size of your jump (how far out you jump), and the level of the river, you may or may not be able to touch the river on your first descent.

While it’s not an exact science (they are pretty dang accurate, though), you may be able to get anywhere from your hands in the river all the way down to your feet.

Just speak with the Jump Master on deck about what you want and she or he will do the best they can to get you soaked, keep you dry, or something in between.

Once you’ve done the Kawarau Bridge Bungy, you will be lowered down into the raft where two operators will congratulate you and get you back to shore safely.

THE FIRST EVER COMMERCIAL BUNGY JUMP SITE IN NEW ZEALAND

The Kawarau Bridge Bungy is the quintessential site to jump at for your first bungy experience.

While it’s not devastatingly high, it will still get your blood pumping as you leap off the edge over the rushing river below.

The viewing deck adjacent to the bridge is often filled with cheering onlookers who will encourage you to jump off the edge and scream with you as you leap to your fate.

The Kawarau Bridge Bungy Center has:

  • A fully equipped cafe: Café 88
  • The outdoor Liquid Courage Bar (amazing in summer)
  • The largest bungy retail shop in Queenstown
  • Two spacious viewing decks
  • An interactive Photo & Video area
  • Incredible crew who ensure your experience is magnificent from start to finish

THE COST OF A KAWARAU BRIDGE BUNGY

A bungy at the Kawarau Bridge costs:

  • $210 NZD for an adult bungy
  • $155 NZD for a child bungy
  • $175 NZD for a student bungy

The cost is the same whether you jump solo or tandem.

With this jump, you receive a free jumper tee professionally designed as well as a jumper certificate to slap up on the wall at home for a great party story.

The Photo and Video Department at the Kawarau Bridge do an amazing job of capturing your entire experience.

You have the option to buy your photos and video in a variety of formats.

There are also combo deals if you’d like to do other products such as another AJ Hackett Bungy, the Nevis Swing or Catapult, the Kawarau Zipride, the Ledge Swing, or the SkyWalk, SkyJump, Bridge Climb in Auckland.

HOW LONG WILL THE KAWARAU BRIDGE BUNGY JUMP TAKE?

If you are going to the Kawarau Bridge on your own, your jump experience can take up to 1.5 hours if you pre-book.

During warm summer months, the Kawarau Bridge is pretty busy, so if you show up without a booking, you might need to wait until a spot becomes available.

If you are utilizing the complimentary transportation, your experience can take up to 2.5 hours including the ride to and from the Kawarau Bungy Center.

You are welcome to hang out at the Kawarau Bridge for as long as you want.

You can grab a beer, perch up at an outdoor table, and watch people jump all day.

TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE KAWARAU BUNGY

You can self-drive to the Kawarau Bungy Center or you can utilize the complimentary bungy buses that go back and forth from Queenstown throughout the day.

Speak to someone at the Station Building (Queenstown Booking Center) about the open time slots and they’ll sort you out a place on the right bus.

Your spectators can come with you free of charge, but they too need to be booked on in advance, so be sure to mention them tagging along and spaces will be reserved for them.

  1. Ledge Bungy

LOCATION OF THE LEDGE BUNGY

THE LEDGE BUNGY JUMP STYLES

This bungy is a freestyle bungy, which means you can do whatever style of jump you want.

You can do the classic forwards swan dive jump or you can do any of the following jump styles:

  • Backwards jump with your feet together
  • Elevator (forwards or backwards) -- this means jumping with your feet first instead of with your head first
  • Front flip
  • Back flip
  • Gainer (running back flip)
  • Handstand
  • Pendulum (the crew holds your harness, leans you out, and lets you go)
  • Star jump
  • Matrix (run, turn around mid jump and point finger guns at the crew)
  • Flying squirrel (run off and grab your ankles behind you)

You will be recovered back to the bungy jump deck by means of a winch.

The crew will explain to you how it works on the day of your jump.

THE LEDGE BUNGY: FREESTYLE BUNGY 400m ABOVE QUEENSTOWN

Owned and operated by AJ Hackett Bungy, this bungy jump is 43 meters above the ground, but because if it’s positioning so high above Queenstown, it looks much, much higher from the edge.

The views from the jump deck are stunning, which makes for truly amazing photos.

So whether you jump gracefully or like a complete scaredy cat, the view will make your jump look awesome regardless.

THE COST OF A LEDGE BUNGY

A Ledge Bungy costs:

  • $205 NZD for adults
  • $155 NZD for children
  • $175 for students

With your jump you get a free jumper tee that’s been professionally designed as well as a certificate to prove you completed the jump.

HOW LONG WILL THE LEDGE BUNGY JUMP TAKE?

If you take the gondola up from Queenstown for a pre-booked jump, the entire experience may take up to 1.5 hours.

If you do not have a jump booked ahead of time, you may need to wait until the next available slot becomes available.

Fortunately, there is a luge track adjacent to the Skyline complex, so you’ll have plenty to keep you busy if there is a wait.

If you walk up and down the Tiki Trail instead of taking the gondola, you’ll want to give yourself about 3 hours for a pre-booked jump.

This will give you time to hike up (which takes between 45 minutes - 1 hour depending on your fitness abilities), complete the jump experience, and walk back down.

TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE LEDGE BUNGY

As you may have already read above, there are only two ways to access the Ledge Bungy.

Well, that is if you’re a “normal” person on a “normal” budget.

The most common ways to get up to the Ledge Bungy is by gondola (approx $30 per round trip ticket) or by hiking the Tiki Trail (free).

If you’re totally loaded and want to arrive in style, you can organize a helicopter to take you up to the top. It’ll cost a pretty penny, though!

P.S.  You can also paraglide down depending on the weather and their bookings.  Click here for more info.
